What Are Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs)?

Electromagnetic fields are areas of energy that form when electric charges are in motion. When an electric current flows, it creates a magnetic field around it; at the same time, electric charges generate electric fields. The combination of these two forces forms what we call an electromagnetic field.

These fields are all around us — from sunlight to everyday electronic devices like mobile phones, microwaves, and Wi-Fi routers.


 

Types of Electromagnetic Fields

EMFs can be classified by their frequency and wavelength:

However, prolonged and intense exposure to certain types of EMFs — especially high-frequency fields — may cause biological effects, such as tissue heating. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), under the WHO, has classified radiofrequency EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B), which warrants further research.


 

How to Reduce Excessive EMF Exposure

  • Keep a safe distance from electronic devices when not in use

  • Avoid sleeping with your phone near your body

  • Use wired connections whenever possible (instead of Wi-Fi)

  • Turn off routers and wireless devices at night

  • Consider using certified electromagnetic shielding products if needed

Beyond health concerns, EMFs are essential for modern life:

  • Medicine: Used in MRI scans, ECGs, physical therapy treatments, and more
